I'm Sorry, Mom

The camera opens on a quiet, gray graveyard. The wind hums low through the trees. Marie Van Claudio stands alone, dressed in black, her hands trembling slightly as she clutches a small bundle of flowers. She kneels in front of her mother’s headstone, staring at the name etched into it. For a long moment, she says nothing.
Then, her voice breaks the silence.
“Hi, Mom…”
A shaky breath escapes her lips. She looks down, ashamed.
“I didn’t think I’d be back here like this… not like this.”
She gently places the flowers at the base of the grave, her fingers lingering against the cold stone.
“I’m sorry.”
The words come out heavier this time. Real. Painful.
“I’m sorry you had to watch that… wherever you are. I’m sorry you had to see your daughter fall… like that.”
Marie clenches her jaw, trying to hold herself together, but her voice cracks anyway.
“I told myself I was doing the right thing. I told myself that if I gave everything—everything I had—I could stop her. I could stop Amy. I could keep my freedom… keep my name… keep my soul.”
She shakes her head slowly.
“But I didn’t. I couldn’t.”
A tear rolls down her cheek as she looks back at the headstone.
“And now… now I don’t even know what I am anymore.”
Her tone grows more emotional, more raw.
“My career… everything I built… it’s slipping away from me. And the worst part?”
She pauses, swallowing hard.
“My daughters…”
Marie closes her eyes tightly, the weight of it all crashing down.
“I was supposed to show them what strength looks like. I was supposed to show them that their mother fights… that she never bows… never breaks.”
Her voice drops to a whisper.
“But what did I show them, Mom?”
Silence lingers for a beat. Then slowly, Marie straightens up, wiping her tears away—not completely gone, but controlled.
“But you didn’t raise me to stay down.”
Her eyes harden, a spark reigniting behind them.
“You didn’t raise me to be somebody’s servant. You didn’t raise me to just… accept defeat.”
She stands now, looking down at the grave with a mix of pain and determination.
“I am still a fighter.”
Her voice grows stronger with every word.
“And I don’t care how long it takes… I don’t care how much it hurts… I will break free. I will tear those chains apart with my bare hands if I have to.”
A deep breath.
“Because that’s who I am. That’s who you raised.”
Marie takes one last look at the headstone, her expression softening.
“I’ll fix this. I promise… I’ll fix this.”
She turns, beginning to walk away slowly. After a few steps, she stops—but doesn’t turn back.
“Just… don’t give up on me yet.”
And with that, Marie Van Claudio walks off into the distance, leaving the flowers behind… and the faint echo of her pain hanging in the cold air.
